PITTSBURGH – Nearly 125 students, representing 8 training providers, participated in the inaugural Project MFG Welding Competition and Career Discovery Day at Pittsburgh Technical College, Nov. 29, as part of the Pennsylvania Talent Pipeline Project’s (PA TPP) expansion to Pittsburgh.

The PA TPP is one of several training pipelines connecting more people to the Navy mission by creating opportunities and building the workforce. The Project MFG Welding Competition and Career Discovery Day sought to engage and energize the Pittsburgh defense industrial base by developing the maritime-focused manufacturing talent pipeline in support of the Navy’s significant demand for critical trade skills.

The welding competition, hosted by Pittsburgh Technical College and run by Project MFG, included 34 local competitors from community and technical education centers and area high schools. Participants raced against a two-hour clock to weld miniature submarines, which were then pressure tested and scored.
