Navy Talent Pipeline Program Celebrates a Successful Career Discovery Day & Project MFG Welding Competition

October 25, 2023, Philadelphia, PA - The Navy Talent Pipeline Program proudly marked its achievement in successfully hosting the 3rd annual Career Discovery Day and Project MFG welding competition on October 25th, 2023, at the renowned Navy Yard in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The event was co-hosted by Project MFG, creating a dynamic platform for celebrating skilled trades and industry innovation.

The Career Discovery Day stood as the centerpiece of the event, featuring active participation from 12 esteemed manufacturing and industrial employers. These organizations actively engaged with over 250 students from 18 different technical training schools and adult education programs. Attendees seized the unique opportunity to explore the facilities at Philly Shipyard, Inc. and North Atlantic Ship Repair, gaining invaluable insights into the maritime industry’s operations. In addition, a series of informative breakout sessions were conducted to empower students with essential skills in job application, resume writing, and interview techniques.

The Project MFG welding competition took center stage, serving as a testament to the commitment of revitalizing America’s industrial base and attracting fresh talent to the realm of skilled trades. This fiercely competitive event brought together 20 welding students, each representing distinct schools, totaling 11 in number. In the span of a challenging two-hour time frame, competitors undertook the formidable task of fabricating a carbon steel pressure vessel employing GMAW processes and provided materials. Their performance was meticulously evaluated, with a focus on real-time problem-solving, the precise application of welding techniques and principles, effective time management, task identification, and prioritization, as well as the ability to interpret and understand blueprints. Judges held the vessels to the highest standards, meticulously assessing for leaks, appearance, welded integrity, and weld fit-up. This rigorous evaluation resulted in the deserved recognition of the competition’s top three winners:
-First Place: Patrick Evanko of Pennsylvania College of Technology.
-Second Place: Nikolas Harnish of Pennsylvania College of Technology.
-Third Place: Bryce Klunk of Colonial Career and Technology Center.

The event further benefitted from a distinguished keynote speaker, Mr. Matthew Sermon, the Executive Director of the Program Execution Office for Strategic Submarines. His insightful address provided valuable guidance and inspiration to all attendees.
